
Samsung SDS will build a new 800-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) high-speed, high-bandwidth network across the Seoul National University campus.
Samsung SDS said on the 24th that it had won the university's project to shift to a next-generation network platform for an intelligent campus. Under the deal, the company will convert the campus network — serving 243 buildings and 50,000 users — into an 800-Gbps high-speed, high-bandwidth network.
The upgrade is expected to reduce the slowdowns and disconnections that university members experience when accessing the network. Professors and researchers will be able to transfer large volumes of artificial intelligence (AI) training and research data quickly and reliably over the high-bandwidth network. The project also introduces an intelligent management environment that can detect network failures and abnormalities, helping a limited IT staff manage the campus network stably.
Samsung SDS will implement a software-defined network (SDN) in the university's next-generation network project. SDN is a technology that moves away from the conventional approach of configuring and managing network equipment individually, instead controlling and operating the entire network through software. It allows network policies and service configurations to be managed consistently from a central point and network settings to be automated according to user requests. Based on these SDN capabilities, the company plans to provide the university with rapid network services and support more efficient operations.
The company will also apply software-based network separation in the project to strengthen the security of the campus network. This approach logically separates networks with different purposes and characteristics — such as research, administration and education — to restrict unnecessary access between areas. It minimizes the chance that a security threat arising in one area will spread to another.
