DAEGU — Police have released the identity of Jung Chang-sung, a 31-year-old Chinese national and university lecturer arrested on charges of murdering a Chinese female exchange student who attended his class, dismembering her body and dumping the remains.
The North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency posted his name, photograph and age on its website on the 1st.
A review committee on identity disclosure decided the previous day to release the information, saying the cruelty of the crime and the gravity of the harm were established and that disclosure was necessary in the broader public interest, including crime prevention.
The information will remain on the agency's website until the 1st of next month.
Jung was arrested on charges of killing the 25-year-old student, identified only as A, in his one-room apartment in Hayang, Gyeongsan, in the early hours of the 20th of last month. He is accused of dismembering her body and dumping the remains in wooded hills and garbage dumps in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, and Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
He also faces allegations that he filed a false report to mislead the investigation and traveled to Dongdaegu Station dressed as a woman before switching off the victim's mobile phone.
Police plan to transfer the case to prosecutors soon.
