LG Uplus is jointly developing a standard model for prefabricated modular data centers (PMDC) with GS E&C and Xi C&A to meet surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
LG Uplus (032640.KS) said on the 6th that it signed a memorandum of understanding to build a PMDC alliance with GS E&C (006360.KS), Xi C&A, Gansam Architects & Partners and D&O CM on the 4th at its Pyeongchon Mega Center in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province.
Under the PMDC approach, building structures along with power and cooling equipment are standardized and prefabricated at a factory before being assembled on site. Compared with conventional site-based construction, the method shortens build times and improves quality consistency.
Drawing on expertise in design, construction, operations and project management, the alliance members have been jointly working since April to develop a standard model that can be applied to actual AI data center (AIDC) projects. Through the agreement, the partners plan to complete a PMDC model competitive not only in South Korea but globally, and to apply it to actual AIDC construction projects.
LG Uplus will define operating standards and technical requirements for PMDC, set business direction and validate the model, based on experience accumulated from building and operating data centers nationwide as well as its AIDC in Paju.
GS E&C will provide constructability reviews, process optimization and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) capabilities for newly built PMDC models, drawing on its experience in large-scale data center construction and field execution. Xi C&A will handle the development of a retrofit model that can be applied to existing buildings, along with power and cooling optimization.
