ICHEON — The city of Icheon said on the 9th that it has begun a full-scale push to attract the relocation of the Korea Racing Authority, making the bid a core part of its regional growth strategy.
The city held a forum on the 7th titled "Analysis of Icheon's Prospects for Attracting the Korea Racing Authority and Response Measures," attended by Mayor Sung Soo-seok and senior department heads. The meeting was arranged to prepare in advance for relocation discussions between the government and the Korea Racing Authority and for the public bidding process to follow.
Participants focused on how hosting a horse racing park would boost the local economy, create jobs and expand municipal finances. They also reviewed issues arising from siting a large-scale facility, including traffic, the environment, urban planning and public acceptance.
The city plans to draw up a bid strategy suited to Icheon based on a comprehensive analysis of transport access, land availability, development conditions and links to nearby tourism and industrial resources. With the matter already discussed at a party-government consultative meeting, the city will gather residents' views while seeking expert advice.
Icheon's entry has intensified competition within Gyeonggi Province. Siheung is reviewing the Hojobeol area as a candidate site and has launched a signature drive, while Hwaseong, Goyang and Dongducheon have signaled their interest directly or indirectly. In Paju, the use of returned U.S. military land has been floated, and Yeoju has argued for its bid on the strength of its transport network.
"Attracting the Korea Racing Authority is an important opportunity that could change Icheon's future," Mayor Sung said. "Together with our residents, we will develop the best bid strategy, one that builds on Icheon's strengths."
