
Lee Nam-cheol, county chief of Goryeong in North Gyeongsang Province, died of esophageal cancer at 12:55 a.m. on the 1st. Lee was 67.
Lee had taken medical leave on the 18th of last month to receive treatment for esophageal cancer at a hospital in Seoul.
Lee joined the Goryeong County office in 1979 and served there for 41 years, holding posts including head of the planning and coordination office, general affairs director and chief of Daegaya Township. Lee was elected county chief in the 2022 local elections and won a second term this year.
Deputy County Chief Jeong Gwang-ho said the funeral would be held as a county-level service.
