PAJU — The city of Paju in Gyeonggi Province said on the 26th that it has expanded its "repeat pedestrian signals" to 10 locations to reduce the time pedestrians spend waiting to cross.
A repeat pedestrian signal gives a walk signal to the same direction twice within a single signal cycle. Because pedestrians who miss one walk signal do not have to wait for the next cycle, waiting times are reduced.
The clearest effect has been at the intersection in front of the Yadang Station public parking lot. Although the crosswalk there is relatively short at 13 meters, the wait for a walk signal had reached 116 seconds. The city cut that wait by 72 seconds through the latest improvement.
The city piloted repeat pedestrian signals at two bus stops on Chaekhyanggi-ro last year. This year's selected sites are five near city hall, two at bus stops in the Unjeong area and one in front of the Yadang Station public parking lot. The city said it gave priority to spots with heavy pedestrian traffic and long wait times.
Yang Sung-won, head of Paju's Advanced City Information Division, said reducing the everyday inconvenience pedestrians face is at the heart of resident-focused signal operations. He added that the city will continue to identify new sites, focusing on areas with many pedestrians, to create a safe and convenient walking environment that residents can feel firsthand.
