Heavy rain will pour again from the night of the 9th, centered on the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province. After the monsoon rains ease, a heat wave is expected to persist across the country.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, rain as heavy as 80mm per hour fell in the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions on the same day. From the 8th until 10 a.m. on the 9th, cumulative rainfall exceeded 200mm in Cheonan and Sejong in South Chungcheong, Daejeon, and Cheongju in North Chungcheong. In the afternoon, heavy rain of 20-30mm per hour also poured on the metropolitan area. A heavy rain warning was issued for southwestern and northwestern Seoul, and a heavy rain advisory for southeastern and northeastern Seoul, placing heavy rain alerts across the entire capital.
Damage from the torrential rain continued. According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, facility damage from the rain totaled 215 cases as of 11 a.m. on the same day. Crops covering 13.6 hectares, about the size of 19 soccer fields, were flooded, and 423 residents were evacuated. In Yeongju, North Gyeongsang, a man in his 70s went missing after being swept away by a torrent, prompting fire authorities to conduct a search operation. Twenty-six KTX trains and 32 regular trains were also delayed.
The rain clouds will move to the metropolitan area and the Yeongseo region of Gangwon from the night of the same day. As the low-level jet strengthens overnight, hot and humid water vapor from the south will flow into the stationary front, concentrating very heavy rain until the early hours of the 10th. Expected rainfall is 30-80mm for Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi (more than 120mm in some areas), and 50-100mm for inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon (more than 150mm in some areas).
After the rain stops, the North Pacific high and the Tibetan high will simultaneously cover the country, bringing full-fledged heat. The heat advisory currently issued mainly for the Yeongnam region is expected to expand to most parts of the country. However, the Korea Meteorological Administration explained that the end of this rain does not mean the monsoon season is over for this year.
On the morning of the 10th, the low temperature is forecast at 21-25 degrees, with a daytime high of 28-34 degrees. On Saturday the 11th, the morning low will reach 22-25 degrees, with a daytime high of 30-36 degrees.
