SEONGNAM — The city of Seongnam activated Level 2 of its Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at 12:30 p.m. on the 9th, launching its response to heavy rainfall.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, approximately 57 millimeters of rain fell in the Seongnam area that day. The city closed 595 access points to Tancheon Stream and its tributaries, and strengthened patrols of sites at risk of collapse, including landslide-prone areas and steep slopes.
The city plans to immediately close underground roadways and underground pedestrian passages if necessary. It also decided to carry out drainage channel maintenance as soon as the rain temporarily subsides.
Seongnam has been implementing a comprehensive summer natural disaster response plan for five months, from May 15 through Oct. 15. The city monitors weather conditions around the clock and activates its response system from the preliminary advisory stage.
The city is also providing residents with safety guidelines through available channels, including disaster alert electronic display boards and the Tancheon warning and alert facilities. It is urging residents to refrain from going outside during periods of concentrated rainfall and to stay away from hazardous areas.
"As this is the first heavy rain alert issued for Seongnam this year, we will make every effort to prevent damage through preemptive response," a Seongnam city official said.
