KATHMANDU — Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with Nepali Foreign Minister Sishir Khanal on the 6th and asked for cooperation in the search and rescue of South Korean nationals missing after severe flooding in Nepal.
The Foreign Ministry said Cho began a three-day visit to Nepal the previous day and held talks with Khanal in Kathmandu. During the meeting, Cho sought assistance in the search and rescue of nine South Korean nationals who have been out of contact. The two also discussed how the South Korean government could support reconstruction in flood-hit areas of Nepal.
Cho will remain in Nepal through the 7th, visiting the government's joint rapid response team and the Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) deployed on the ground to review search and rescue operations, and meeting with families of the missing.
The ministry said the 13-member KDRT rescue team would continue its search, with 10 members assigned to a tunnel near the weir dam and three conducting a drone search of the powerhouse. A day earlier, the KDRT team rescued a Chinese national while searching inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower plant near the weir dam.
