
Boston has introduced artificial intelligence education in its public schools because the world is entering an era that demands AI skills as a basic literacy — from how the technology works to how to use it critically and ethically. The push gained momentum as AI instruction spread through private education under the leadership of Big Tech companies, strengthening the view that public schools must take responsibility for teaching AI. With widespread concern that misuse of AI is eroding students' attention spans and critical thinking, the argument is that schools themselves must step in.

China's moves in the intensifying contest for AI supremacy have also spurred the United States. Elsewhere in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, the growing number of cases of AI instruction in schools reflects a shared concern that AI must be folded into formal education to cultivate "AI-ready talent."
Resistance to student use of AI remains strong in the United States. A prominent example came in April, when New York City's plan to open an AI-focused high school, the Next Generation Technology High School, in Manhattan's financial district collapsed in the face of fierce opposition from parents and educators who argued that AI use would weaken students' focus and critical thinking. Critics also said schools are not laboratories for Big Tech and warned that AI education would instead be concentrated among a wealthy, privileged class.
Yet a counterargument is also spreading: precisely for those reasons, schools must teach responsible AI use. In a survey of 545 teachers from kindergarten through high school conducted by the polling firm Ipsos, 78% agreed that teaching students how to use AI responsibly should be part of the school curriculum. The survey also found that 52% of responding teachers work at schools with no separate guidelines on student use of AI.
The New York City Department of Education, in written responses to Seoul Economic Daily following the collapse of the AI high school plan, said its top priority is providing New York City students with excellent secondary education opportunities and outcomes, adding that it will continue to discuss with school communities how to respond responsibly to technological change. In an editorial in June, The Washington Post said of the failed plan that it is healthy for parents to scrutinize new technology before it is introduced to their children, but argued that excluding AI from schools would ultimately harm students. Understanding how to use AI effectively, the paper said, will serve students when they enter the workforce. The editorial raised the need to expand access to AI knowledge through public education, opportunities now concentrated in some private schools.
There is also acute anxiety that the United States could fall behind China, which is said to be moving quickly on AI education. Beijing is driving a state-led AI education policy. In Hangzhou, a leading Chinese tech city, students are required to receive at least 10 hours of AI instruction a year starting in elementary school. Chunhui Elementary School in Hangzhou's Binjiang district has integrated AI across the entire classroom. It has deployed AI agents not only during lessons but also in morning reading periods and after-school classes to support personalized learning. Shanghai requires 30 hours of AI instruction a year — three times Hangzhou's total — and has specified that teachers who excel at AI instruction receive preferential treatment in promotions and compensation.
The United Arab Emirates has framed its AI education philosophy as cultivating talent for a post-oil era. It created the world's first dedicated AI ministry in 2017, and beginning last year designated AI a required subject across all public education from age 4. It also became the first country in the world to integrate AI into regular school class hours.
Notably, these countries are teaching not just AI-related technical skills but critical use as well. Curricula range from AI literacy to identifying disinformation. Singapore provides every middle school student with a personal digital device, yet builds learning around interaction with teachers rather than between students and devices.
In northern Europe, Estonia — a small country of 1.3 million people — joined with OpenAI and other AI companies early this year to launch the "Socrates AI" education experiment, providing AI free of charge to about 20,000 students and 3,000 teachers. The name reflects a philosophy of cultivating reasoning ability. Even China, which is pursuing AI education with the same speed it applies to industrial policy, has made the ability to question and verify AI-generated answers a required part of the curriculum.
Sam Illingworth, a professor at Edinburgh Napier University in Britain who has studied AI literacy, noted that some teachers refused to bring the internet into classrooms in the late 1990s but ultimately could not stop it. "A student who refuses to even touch a tool like AI is effectively handing that tool over to students who know how to use it critically," the professor said.
