
GS Engineering & Construction (006360.KS) is launching research into future housing solutions designed to respond to the climate crisis.
The company said on the 25th that it had conducted joint research with CRA, an architecture and innovation design group led by renowned architect Carlo Ratti, on the theme of future climate-ready housing concepts.
The research focused on analyzing the impact of climate change on living environments using data, and on developing solutions that can protect residents' health and safety as well as their housing assets.
GS E&C and CRA are jointly analyzing residential environments at home and abroad based on data for key climate variables such as heavy rain, extreme heat and fine dust. The research combined CRA's capabilities in data analysis and sensor-based design with GS E&C's expertise in home construction and operation. Because the research produced a range of future housing concepts, the company plans to carry out demonstration tests to verify their technical feasibility and effectiveness. Verified technologies will then be applied sequentially to Xi apartments, taking into account the conditions and characteristics of major project sites.
A GS E&C official said the joint research is significant in that it analyzed the impact of the climate crisis on living environments using data and sought preemptive responses. "Through continued research and technology verification, we will build next-generation living environments where Xi residents can live safely and comfortably even amid climate change," the official said.
Carlo Ratti is director of the Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a founding partner of CRA. He is an expert in "responsive design," a field that combines urban and architectural data with sensor technology to respond to environmental changes in real time. His notable works include CapitaSpring in Singapore and the Jian Mu Tower in Shenzhen.
