
Hyundai Engineering & Construction is expanding its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technology at construction sites. The company said on the 4th that it recently completed a demonstration of dust-reduction work using water-spraying drones at the redevelopment site of Gwacheon Jugong Complexes 8 and 9. The company comprehensively tested the drones' performance, flight stability, and integration with operations in an actual demolition environment.
The water-spraying drones can concentrate 50 liters of water per minute over a radius of up to 12 to 15 meters under windless conditions. Directly connected to power cables and water hoses, they operate without limits on flight time or water supply. Remote control allows the spraying location and range to be adjusted in real time. The drones can perform work regardless of location while minimizing human access. Hyundai E&C expects the technology to significantly improve safety and work efficiency compared with existing methods that rely on water trucks or fixed dust-reduction equipment.
The technology is being developed by the HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, the integrated research and development (R&D) organization of Hyundai E&C (000720) and Hyundai Engineering. Among its four research pillars, the institute has designated "smart construction that enhances safety and quality using AI and robotics while preventing human error." It is conducting R&D in AI, robotics, automation, and digital technology.
Several technologies have already been applied at sites, including ground-controlled tower cranes, the four-legged walking robot "Spot," and unmanned drone stations. Wearable robots, material-transport robots, and cleaning robots have also been introduced. "Through this demonstration, we confirmed the potential for applying water-spraying drones to demolition sites, and we plan to apply them to various sites and demolition processes going forward," a Hyundai E&C official said. "Based on the adoption and demonstration of various smart construction technologies, we will lead in creating a safer and more sustainable construction environment."
