LS Group said its "29th LS Overseas Volunteer Corps of University Students" departed on the 27th to carry out volunteer activities in Vietnam and Indonesia.
The corps, comprising about 40 Korean university students, will run science classes, sports events and hygiene education at local elementary schools over 11 days through the 6th of next month. The group also plans to operate hands-on educational programs, including making jet-engine fans and exploration robots.
The volunteer corps will repair aging school facilities and conduct cultural exchange activities such as taekwondo demonstrations, K-pop dance, fan dance performances and a mini-Olympics.
The LS Overseas Volunteer Corps of University Students began in 2007. To date, a total of 29 cohorts involving about 1,300 university students and employees have participated, carrying out activities to improve educational environments in Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia.
"We hope the positive influence of the university student volunteer corps will serve as an opportunity to instill dreams and hope in local children," an LS official said.
In Korea, LS runs the "22nd LS Dream Science Class." Twenty-seven university students in science and engineering fields will conduct science classes for 180 elementary school students across nine regions nationwide, including Gumi, Incheon, Jeonju and Busan, through the 14th of next month.
The students take part in hands-on sessions where they build and operate science kits, such as self-driving tractors and aerospace orbiter robots. LS runs the program to reduce childcare gaps during school vacations and to raise elementary school students' interest in science.
