"I came here with a strong ambition and passion for titles."
Lee Kang-in (Atletico Madrid), who returned to the Spanish stage after three years, confidently expressed his aspirations at an official presentation held there.
Lee held a public presentation on the 18th, Korea time, at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid, ahead of the opening of the new La Liga season in Spain.
Lee, who signed a long-term contract with the club through June 2031, first appeared before domestic fans earlier this month, on the 9th, in a Coupang Play Series friendly against Manchester City at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
At the presentation, Lee said, "Having lived in Spain since I was young, I know well how great this club is," adding, "From the moment I received the club's call, I wanted to join for one reason only — to win titles. I will devote myself to training so that I can bring joy to the fans."
Lee also shared his expectations for manager Diego Simeone, whom he experienced firsthand during training. "The most surprising thing, and what I felt was different from my previous clubs, was the manager's tremendous passion," he said. "The training intensity was very high, but thanks to the team's unique atmosphere, I truly enjoyed it. I am really happy to be here."
Having signed a long-term contract through 2031 and been given the No. 7 shirt of club legend Antoine Griezmann (Orlando City), Lee is under high expectations from the club, yet he remained composed amid the flood of attention. "My only goal is to help the team," he said, pledging his commitment. "I will do my best in that role until the last day I wear this jersey."
Atletico Madrid, which finished last season without a trophy, strengthened its squad this summer by signing not only Lee but also Alejandro Grimaldo (formerly of Leverkusen), Morten Hjulmand (formerly of Sporting Lisbon) and Cristian Romero (formerly of Tottenham) in succession.
Lee is expected to make his official debut in the 2026-2027 La Liga opener against promoted side Malaga, at his home stadium Riyadh Air Metropolitano at 4 a.m. on the 20th.
