BUSAN — The Busan Metropolitan Government will invest 12.1 billion won ($8.7 million) with Pusan National University in precision medicine research that combines artificial intelligence with biotechnology and medical care.
The city said on the 8th that Pusan National University was selected for the AI Star Fellowship program run by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP). From 2026 through 2031, the city and the university will invest a combined 12.1 billion won, including 11 billion won in state funding and 550 million won each from the city and the university.
Pusan National University will develop a multimodal AI-based precision medicine platform that integrates and analyzes ultrasound imaging, biosignals, genomic data and diagnostic records. Core projects include three-dimensional ultrasound imaging technology using embodied AI, an automated diagnosis generation system based on medical AI, and disease prediction models.
Samsung Medison, 42Maru and Seegene Medical Foundation will also take part, reflecting demand from medical and industrial sites in the research and pursuing commercialization of the technology. The city plans to use the project to keep leading AI researchers in the region and strengthen the competitiveness of its bio-health industry.
"We will provide support so that research results lead to innovation in local industry and the creation of new jobs," said Kim Dong-hyun, director general of the Busan Metropolitan Government's Future Technology Strategy Bureau.
