A serving police officer in Jeju who was booked on charges of falsely closing missing-person cases was placed in custody a day after being released.
The Jeju District Court held a hearing on the arrest warrant at about 2:30 p.m. on the 25th and issued the warrant for Bu, a police sergeant accused of dereliction of duty, forgery and use of official electronic records, and obstruction of official duties by deception.
The court said the officer posed "a risk of flight and a risk of destroying evidence."
Bu was arrested without a warrant on the 22nd of this month and released on the 24th after a review of the legality of the arrest, only to be detained again a day later.
Bu is accused of telling the person who filed a report in May that authorities had "made contact" with Jang Mi-ran, 37, then closing the case internally and deleting Jang's records from the management list of the missing-persons profiling system.
The officer is also accused of falsely closing a missing-person case involving a man in his 60s on the 2nd of last month using a similar method.
Police found the body of a man identified as B at a location in Jeju on the 22nd, and on the morning of the 24th recovered a body believed to be Jang's in Hallim-eup, Jeju City. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency said an autopsy produced a verbal opinion from a forensic examiner that the body matched the missing woman, confirming the identification as Jang.
