
BUSAN — Artificial intelligence will analyze Busan's urban and spatial data alongside disaster records to identify disaster-prone areas and risks to key infrastructure in advance. The city also plans to develop technology that visualizes such risks on maps to help draw up preemptive safety measures. The Busan Metropolitan Government said on the 25th that it had been selected for a Korea-Spain bilateral international joint research project led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT).
The research centers on developing technology that uses AI to analyze data on cities and infrastructure, predict disaster risks and manage them preemptively. Busan will take part in the project through December 2028 alongside Pusan National University and companies and research institutes, providing urban and disaster data and demonstrating the developed technology locally.
In particular, the project will combine Busan's urban and spatial data with disaster records to analyze the risk levels of disaster-prone areas and key infrastructure, and visualize them using geographic information systems (GIS). The aim is to grasp disaster risks intuitively and support decision-making in setting safety policy and responding to disasters. The performance will also be verified in real urban environments by combining Spain's advanced technology with domestic technology.
The Busan government, together with Pusan National University and Busan Techno Park, is also participating in international joint research with the United Kingdom to develop decision-making models and systems that support transportation planning. Using the Korea-Spain research as a springboard, the city plans to expand its international technology cooperation from transportation to disaster safety.
"As climate change and urban densification make disaster risks more complex, it is important to secure preemptive disaster-response capabilities using AI and data," Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said. "We will actively cooperate to enhance citizens' safety by making use of advanced technology."
