Bodies believed to be those of missing people have been found one after another on Jeju Island in recent days. In the three days since the 22nd alone, four such cases have been confirmed.
The Jeju Coast Guard said on the 24th that a man estimated to be in his 70s, identified as A, was found dead in waters near Sinheung-ri, Jocheon-eup, in Jeju City at around 3:04 a.m. on the 23rd.
An angler fishing nearby found the man and reported it to the 119 emergency services. The Jeju Coast Guard determined that A had been reported missing to the Jeju Eastern Police Station on the 22nd and is investigating the exact cause and circumstances of the death.
At around 10:46 a.m. the same day, a body believed to be that of Jang Mi-ran, 37, who went missing in May, was found near the lodging where Jang had been staying long-term. It had been 104 days since the disappearance.
In Jang's case, the officer in charge had falsely closed the case when the initial missing-persons report was filed. The report was refiled last month, and police had continued the search since.
At around 9:35 a.m. that day, another missing person who had been reported to police was also found dead near a valley in Aewol-eup, Jeju City.
Earlier, on the 22nd, a man in his 60s was found dead in Songdang-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City.
This man had also been reported missing on the 2nd of last month, but the same officer who had handled Jang's case was found to have falsely closed the case in a similar manner. His family filed another missing-persons report on the 21st, and the search was resumed.
