A serving police officer is under investigation for destroying mobile phone evidence belonging to his son, who is accused of illegal filming.
The Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency said on the 27th that it is investigating Senior Inspector A, assigned to a police substation in the province, on charges of destroying evidence under the Criminal Act.
Senior Inspector A is accused of concealing evidence by smashing and discarding his son's mobile phone after learning in May this year that his high school student son had illegally filmed a teacher.
Police, acting on a report from the victimized teacher, referred Senior Inspector A's son to prosecutors last month. Police then detected signs that Senior Inspector A and his wife had destroyed evidence and launched a compulsory investigation, including a search and seizure at his home. While the law provides a family exemption that waives punishment when a relative harbors an offender or destroys evidence, police are reportedly examining whether there are charges to which the family exemption does not apply, such as inciting the destruction of evidence.
