Namyangju Converts Aging Facilities into Multigenerational Sports Spaces

The city of Namyangju in Gyeonggi Province is accelerating efforts to reorganize aging sports facilities into multigenerational community sports spaces. The approach involves demolishing underused facilities and converting them into multipurpose sports areas that people of various ages can use together.

Namyangju said on the 27th that it held an opening ceremony for the "Chasan-ri Futsal and Ground Golf Course" in the Chasan-ri area of Hwado-eup. About 100 people attended the ceremony, including Namyangju Mayor Choi Hyun-deok, National Assembly members, provincial and city council members, heads of institutions and social organizations, and local residents.

The facility was newly built on the site of a demolished aging gateball court. The city invested a total project cost of 1.3 billion won and carried out construction over about eight months, from November last year to June this year. On a site of approximately 3,000 square meters, it features one futsal field (doubling as a ground golf course), a small park, and parking facilities.

Notably, a single field was designed for combined use as both futsal and ground golf. By accommodating both futsal, favored by young people, and ground golf, a leisure activity for the elderly, in one space, the city increased the utilization of the facility. Sports facilities that had been separated by generation were built as an integrated space.

The city expects the Chasan-ri facility to establish itself as a community sports hub used together by residents of Hwado-eup and nearby areas. It anticipates the facility will broaden citizens' opportunities to participate in community sports and contribute to revitalizing the local community.

"I hope the Chasan-ri futsal and ground golf course becomes a facility that brings vitality to local residents," Mayor Choi said. "We will build more sports facilities going forward to create conditions where citizens can enjoy healthy leisure lives."
