President Lee Jae-myung on the 1st nominated Kye Seung-kyoon, a professor at Pusan National University, as chairman of the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property.
Kang Yu-jung, senior presidential spokesperson, said in a written briefing that the appointee is "a legal scholar well versed in intellectual property law who has expanded his expertise to artificial intelligence and public procurement, and an expert who has contributed to the development of intellectual property policy and legislation through work on various government committees and academic societies."
Kang said Kye is "the right person to preemptively respond to changes in the technological environment, including AI and the digital transformation, and to make intellectual property a core driver of national growth, beyond its creation and protection." She added that he "is expected to faithfully serve as the control tower of the national intellectual property strategy by enhancing the council's expertise and effectiveness."
Kye was born in Busan and graduated from Gaya High School and the law department at Pusan National University, where he later earned master's and doctoral degrees in law. He also completed a master's program in law at the University of Munich in Germany. He currently serves as president of the Korea Intellectual Property Society and as a non-standing commissioner of the Korea Copyright Commission, and sits on the Korean Language Deliberation Council under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
