President Lee Jae-myung met on the 20th with Wang Yi, a member of the Chinese Communist Party's Political Bureau and China's foreign minister, who is on an official visit to South Korea, and discussed a broad range of issues including the direction of bilateral relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Meeting Wang that morning, Lee said the two countries are producing clear results in fully restoring their relationship following his back-to-back meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping last year and this year. He stressed that the two nations are strengthening horizontal, mutually beneficial economic cooperation on the basis of political trust, while also deepening friendship and trust between their peoples.
Wang conveyed Xi's regards and responded that bilateral relations are maintaining stable development based on the shared understanding formed through the two leaders' reciprocal state visits. He said he would play an active role in implementing the sector-by-sector follow-up steps agreed by the two leaders, so that the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year can be marked in a meaningful way.
Lee asked Wang to convey his special regards to Xi, and Wang said he would pass them along. It was the first time in five years, since Wang's visit to South Korea in September 2021, that he had called on a South Korean president.
