President Lee Jae-myung, who is visiting San Francisco, attended the "San Francisco AI Summit" held locally on the 24th and delivered the "San Francisco AI Declaration," presenting Korea's new vision for the AI era.
Attending the event were Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung, and Naver Chairman Lee Hae-jin. From global big tech companies, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Broadcom CEO Hock Tan were also present.
President Lee first said, "The Republic of Korea will emerge as a core, irreplaceable country in the global AI supply chain." He added, "Based on our world-class memory chip competitiveness and production capacity, we will become a trusted AI chip production base and supply chain partner." He emphasized realizing the artificial intelligence (AI) demand underpinning the government's three mega projects and becoming a responsible AI leader.
He also said Korea would take a leading role as a "global hub" that narrows the gap between leading and developing nations. President Lee said, "We will build horizontal cooperation networks with various countries to create new AI markets, and enable citizens of more countries to participate in the opportunities of AI innovation." He added, "We will become a responsible partner that grows together by sharing AI opportunities and benefits with the world, rather than pursuing Korea's growth alone." He also made clear that the benefits of AI must not remain with only certain groups.
At the same time, he said, "We will build an era in which AI achievements become new opportunities for everyone," adding, "We are considering a new distribution model so that the benefits of AI do not stay with certain groups but spread to society as a whole." He stressed, "This is because the future of AI cannot be completed through technological progress and economic achievements alone." He continued, "No country yet has a perfect answer, but that is why the Republic of Korea too intends to contemplate, experiment, and find new solutions together with the world."
In addition, President Lee added, "Just as the Golden Gate Bridge, the symbol of San Francisco, connects the city with the world, I ask that all of you leading the global AI industry also become a bridge of cooperation that connects the world."
