U.S. President Donald Trump has stressed that he will not allow China to dominate the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency. He also said he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States next month to discuss the issue.
In an interview with U.S. outlet Punchbowl News released on the 7th, Trump said, "AI is a field several times larger than the internet," adding, "We don't want to see China dominate cryptocurrency and win in AI." Trump continued, "I'll have a great time with President Xi, who is coming to the United States in a few weeks, and I'll talk about these issues," adding, "Many people think China is beating us in the AI field, so we can't let ourselves lose."
Earlier, Trump announced that Xi could come to the United States around the 24th of next month. Trump met with Xi in Beijing, China, on May 14-15. Reuters reported that a U.S. delegation led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would hold high-level talks with China on AI in September ahead of the summit.
On the same day, regarding Texas's move to regulate data centers, Trump said, "That's a mistake," pointing out that "many regions want data centers, and that means a lot of money coming in." Trump added, "Data centers are the most incredible buildings I've ever seen," noting that "the data center industry could be bigger than oil, and stopping it is stopping AI."
On cryptocurrency, Trump argued that "more and more people are paying with bitcoin and forgetting cash," and that "this greatly relieves the burden on our dollar." As if conscious of criticism that his family is pursuing private gain through cryptocurrency promotion policies, Trump also added, "My children's businesses are not connected to the government."
