Hyosung Heavy Industries (298040) will supply ultra-high-voltage transformers for a hydroelectric power project in Brazil.
Hyosung Heavy Industries said on the 29th that it had won an order for six 500kV ultra-high-voltage transformers from hydropower and power equipment specialist Andritz Hydro on the 28th (local time).
Andritz Hydro is the Brazilian subsidiary of Austria-based Andritz and has handled more than 25% of the country's hydropower capacity. Over 30 years, it has established itself as a key partner and an equipment and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) provider for major local power companies.
The ultra-high-voltage transformers supplied by Hyosung will be used at the Foz do Areia hydroelectric power plant in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Brazil has the world's second-largest installed hydropower capacity and relies on hydropower for 60% of its total electricity. Recently, the Brazilian government has pushed to expand large-scale generation capacity amid rising power demand, expanding capacity at Foz do Areia from the existing 1,676 megawatts (MW) to 2,536 MW.
Hyosung Heavy Industries also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a "hybrid STATCOM" that combines its STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) with Andritz Hydro's synchronous condenser.
STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are key facilities that stably maintain the voltage and frequency of the power grid, and are mainly used for renewable energy generation such as wind and solar power, which fluctuate sharply depending on weather conditions. The two facilities operate complementarily, with the STATCOM responding rapidly to voltage fluctuations through a semiconductor-based control device, and the synchronous condenser providing inertia and stability to the grid through rotating machinery.
Meanwhile, the two companies agreed to continue a long-term partnership, including gaining an early foothold in the Latin American power stabilization market, based on their technological capabilities and market experience.
