
Samsung SDI (006400.KS) has passed a fire-containment test for batteries used in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, a core facility in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. A UPS is a device that immediately supplies backup power stored in batteries when power-supply irregularities occur in AI data centers, such as sudden outages or voltage instability.
Samsung SDI said on the 14th that it met all evaluation criteria in a recent large-scale indoor fire test conducted by global safety certification body UL Solutions.
The large-scale indoor fire test is a procedure that verifies whether a fire spreads to adjacent racks or systems after a module inside a UPS battery rack is forcibly burned out. In this test, Samsung SDI's UPS battery module burned out, but no fire propagation, gas emission, explosion, or heat generation occurred in the surrounding area. In particular, the fire extinguished on its own without the operation of the overhead sprinkler.
Samsung SDI explained that this was the result of adopting heat-propagation prevention technology through its proprietary system structure design. Samsung SDI uses lithium manganese oxide (LMO), which has high output and stable material characteristics, in its UPS batteries, and applied its distinctive prismatic battery technology, including a heat-resistant aluminum case and a vent that releases gas.
UL Solutions introduced the large-scale indoor fire test early this year to verify risks such as explosion or heat propagation when an actual fire occurs in a UPS, and Samsung SDI became the first in the world to pass this test.
Samsung SDI plans to accelerate its push into the AI data center and grid-scale energy storage system (ESS) markets, based on its differentiated safety technology across various ESS products, including UPS batteries and the Samsung Battery Box (SBB).
