An online streaming series has been reimagined as premium-format theater content. CJ 4DPLEX presented the Disney+ original series "A Shop for Killers Season 2" in 4DX, expanding the format's content lineup beyond films to streaming originals.
CJ 4DPLEX said on the 12th that it had held a special 4DX screening of the "A Shop for Killers Season 2" finale at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall on the 11th. It marked the first time in Korea that a streaming original has been shown in the 4DX format.
The screening paired the series' action scenes with 4DX effects to create a theater-exclusive viewing experience. Air shots, back ticklers and strobe lighting were applied to match the weapons featured on screen, while wind, water and light effects combined with motion-chair movements to deliver the action more vividly.
Ahead of the screening, a stage greeting was held with director Lee Kwon and actors Lee Dong-wook, Kim Hye-jun, Geum Hae-na, Kim Min, Jung Yun-ha, Lee Tae-young and Yoo Hyun-soo. The cast and crew met invited audience members in person, expressed their thanks, shared stories behind the production and enjoyed the season's conclusion together.
CJ 4DPLEX has applied 4DX technology to a range of content, including films and performances. This time it extended that reach to streaming original series, broadening the scope of content experiences available only in theaters. The company said the effort is meaningful because it lets viewers experience content in a new way through theaters and premium screens, rather than merely consuming the content itself.
CJ 4DPLEX said it plans to continue expanding the content and intellectual property it can bring to 4DX by working with a range of partners, including content producers and platforms.
"This special screening is meaningful as the first attempt in Korea to combine 4DX technology with streaming original content to offer a new viewing experience," said Boo Kang-il, head of content business at CJ 4DPLEX. "We will continue to pair various content intellectual property with our technology-driven premium screens to provide audiences with a differentiated theater experience."
The pairing of streaming series with 4DX has already been tried overseas. In May, CJ 4DPLEX held special 4DX screenings of the series finale of the Prime Video original "The Boys" in the United States and Canada. Shown at major theater chains including Regal, AMC and Cineplex a day before its Prime Video release, it presented a new way of consuming content that combined a streaming premiere with premium theater formats.
