Extreme heat continued across the Daegu and North Gyeongsang region, pushing daytime temperatures in Daegu and Gyeongju to their highest levels this year.
On the 27th, the official observation station in Gyeongju recorded a high of 39.1 degrees Celsius, the highest in the country. At an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) in Sinam-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, an even higher reading of 39.2 degrees was observed.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast that daytime highs in Daegu and North Gyeongsang would rise to around 38 degrees on the 28th as well, with tropical nights expected overnight. It urged residents to refrain from outdoor activities and outdoor work, and to ensure adequate rest and hydration.
According to the Daegu Regional Office of Meteorology, as of 5 p.m. that day, highs in major areas of North Gyeongsang were recorded as follows: Gyeongju at 39.1 degrees, Goryeong at 38.5 degrees, Gyeongsan at 38.4 degrees, Gigye-myeon in Pohang at 38.1 degrees, Hwabuk-myeon in Yeongcheon at 37.4 degrees, Geumcheon-myeon in Cheongdo at 37 degrees, and Gilan-myeon in Andong at 36.5 degrees.
In Daegu, temperatures in most areas also soared to around 38 degrees. Sinam-dong in Dong-gu was the highest at 39.2 degrees, followed by Buk-gu at 38.5 degrees, Okpo-eup in Dalseong-gun at 38.3 degrees, the official representative observation station in Hyomok-dong, Dong-gu at 38.1 degrees, and Seo-gu at 37.9 degrees.
Based on official observation stations, Gyeongju, which recorded 39.1 degrees at around 2:59 p.m. that day, was the hottest in the country. Including AWS readings, the temperature in Sinam-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, which rose to 39.2 degrees at around 2:58 p.m., was the highest nationwide.
The heat wave is expected to continue on the 28th. Morning lows in Daegu and North Gyeongsang will remain high, while daytime highs are forecast to reach 34 to 38 degrees. With temperatures not dropping sufficiently at night, tropical nights are expected in many areas.
That day, a major heat wave warning was in effect for all of Daegu except Gunwi-gun, as well as for Gyeongsan, Cheongdo, Goryeong, Pohang, and the central-northern and southern parts of Gyeongju. All warnings have since been lifted.
The KMA warned that extreme heat capable of threatening life was expected in these areas, with the highest perceived temperatures rising above 38 degrees or highs exceeding 39 degrees.
It also recommended reviewing the immediate suspension or postponement of all outdoor activities and outdoor work other than essential tasks, and taking hydration and rest in cool places.
Although there is a possibility of showers in some areas on the 27th and 28th, the heat is not expected to subside for an extended period. Temperatures are expected to fall temporarily during rainfall before rising quickly again once the showers stop.
