The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, together with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), will distribute about 2.05 million second-round discount coupons offering 6,000 won off movie tickets starting at 10 a.m. on July 8, the ministry said Friday.
The movie discount coupons can be used on the websites and applications of multiplex cinema chains CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and Cine Q. As with the first round of distribution, two coupons per person will be automatically issued to each member's online coupon box at each cinema, and the coupons can be used when paying for movie tickets.
However, discounts will end once each cinema's allotted quantity is exhausted, and any unused coupons in members' coupon boxes will also be automatically canceled.
Cinemas other than the four multiplex chains (independent and art film theaters, small cinemas, and silver cinemas) do not divide coupon distribution into first and second rounds, and have been applying on-site discounts on a first-come, first-served basis continuously since May 13. The list of cinemas participating in the coupon program and whether each cinema's funding has been exhausted can be checked on the KOFIC website.
The ministry secured a supplementary budget this year and distributed more than 2 million first-round discount coupons starting May 13. According to the ministry, sales for the week immediately following the first distribution reached 15.9 billion won, up 47.9 percent from 10.7 billion won in the week just before the distribution.
"We hope that during the upcoming summer vacation and holiday season, people will enjoy pleasant times at movie theaters with family and friends using the second-round discount coupons, and the ministry will continue to make multifaceted efforts to revitalize Korea's film industry," a ministry official said.
