Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee and OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman will meet at OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco to discuss cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and Samsung Electronics' AI transformation (AX).
OpenAI said Lee and Altman plan to hold a meeting with key executives of both companies on the morning of the 25th at its San Francisco headquarters.
At the meeting, cooperation in AI infrastructure areas such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), DRAM, and advanced foundry is expected to be the central agenda. An AI transformation strategy that applies generative AI across Samsung Electronics' operations is also expected to be discussed.
Samsung Electronics is one of OpenAI's largest global corporate customers and is pushing to introduce ChatGPT and the AI coding tool "Codex" for all of its employees.
The two sides are expected to discuss ways to link Samsung Electronics' memory chip and foundry capabilities with the large-scale AI infrastructure business OpenAI is pursuing. However, specific chip supply volumes, investment scale, and contract timelines were not disclosed.
Samsung Electronics and OpenAI signed a strategic partnership last October and have continued cooperation to expand advanced memory production and build next-generation AI infrastructure. OpenAI regards its cooperation with the Korean government, Samsung Electronics, and SK hynix as its first country-level strategic partnership in the Asia-Pacific region.
Meanwhile, ahead of his meeting with Lee, Altman held a one-on-one meeting with President Lee Jae-myung on the 24th and then attended an AI summit in San Francisco. He subsequently discussed AI infrastructure cooperation with officials from Samsung Electronics and SK Group.
