KT (030200.KS) said Wednesday it has deployed a hub-based 5G business network at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office, marking the first such application in the public sector.
A 5G business network is a communications solution for businesses and public institutions that replaces existing wired-based work infrastructure with a security-enhanced 5G wireless network. It is designed to enable a smart work environment, helping employees work without constraints of time or place.
The hub-based 5G business network moves away from the previous approach, in which government agencies, local governments, and other organizations requiring network security approval each built duplicate systems individually. Instead, it is designed to be built in an integrated manner at regional-level hubs and shared by affiliated local governments and institutions.
KT installed the GMG, the core equipment of the 5G business network, at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office data center, and opened linked business networks for seven local governments under Gyeonggi Province, including Suwon, Paju, and Uijeongbu. Going forward, KT plans to develop additional back-office functions that can separate authority between higher-level and affiliated organizations, simultaneously strengthening clients' independent operation and infrastructure efficiency.
"This hub-based 5G business network model is a new business model that can be used by all customers who jointly use internal infrastructure, including regional local governments as well as government agencies and public institutions," said Jeon Myung-jun, executive vice president at KT. "KT will become a provider that actively supports the digital transformation of public customers using various platform services."
