LG Uplus has become the first telecom carrier in Korea to introduce a combined mobile plan that makes no distinction between 5G and LTE. The plan allows users to choose based on data allowance and transmission speed, regardless of network generation.
LG Uplus held an online press conference Wednesday to unveil "Simply 2.0," a plan brand centered on the integrated 5G-LTE offering. The plan overhaul was based on more than 10,000 customer opinions submitted through "Simple Lab," LG Uplus's dedicated communication channel.
The combined plan consolidates the existing 53 types of 5G and LTE plans into 18, streamlining user choices. Until now, LG Uplus users had to review detailed benefits according to network type and age before selecting a plan. With the combined plan, users only need to consider data allowance and speed when choosing.
LG Uplus also plans to apply a data safety option (QoS) across all tiers of the combined plan, allowing users to continue using data at speeds of 400 Kbps to 5 Mbps depending on their plan even after exhausting their basic data.
"Automatic segment-based benefits" apply benefits automatically according to age and usage characteristics, replacing the previous method in which customers had to search for and select specific benefits themselves. Users previously had to separately subscribe to kids, youth, young adult, or senior plans, but with the combined plan, the relevant benefits automatically switch as the user's age changes, even after subscribing to a general plan.
LG Uplus is also introducing an "all-in-one" product that consolidates the previous process, in which customers had to subscribe to mobile and internet services separately and then apply for a bundle. The company is strengthening its roaming services as well, offering 5G roaming in 100 countries worldwide as of this month.
The new plans take effect on the first of next month. LG Uplus is the first mobile carrier in Korea to implement a combined plan. Other companies are expected to follow with their own combined plans. SK Telecom plans to launch a combined plan on July 2 after consolidating its existing plans, while KT is also planning a launch in the second half of this year.
