The PGA Tour will open next season in California rather than Hawaii.
The tour announced its schedule on its website on the 26th, saying it will hold 33 regular-season tournaments next year. Adding the three playoff events brings the total to 36. The schedule for the fall series that follows will be announced later.
The season opener is The American Express, which begins January 21 at La Quinta Country Club in California. The tour had traditionally started its season in Hawaii, but this year's event there was canceled because of course maintenance problems caused by drought.
Among the 33 regular-season tournaments, the event set to begin February 18 has yet to secure a title sponsor or a venue. The Wyndham Championship, previously the final regular-season event, has been renamed Go by Raymond James. The newly created Sompo Championship will be held July 29 at Silverado Resort in Napa, California.
Eight signature events, each with a total purse of $20 million, will be held, the same number as this year. The playoffs will again consist of three stages. The FedEx St. Jude Championship opens August 12, followed by the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.
The three-event playoff format will run only through next year. Starting in 2028, the PGA Tour will crown its season champion at the finale of a championship series and then hold a separate match-play event, a tournament of champions limited to the top 32 players.
