Son Heung-min of LAFC, who has been displaying a sharpened scoring touch by netting goals in two consecutive matches in Major League Soccer (MLS), has been named to the league's Team of the Matchday.
Son claimed a spot in the "Team of the Matchday," which the MLS office announced on the 24th (Korea time) covering rounds 16 and 17 of the 2026 season.
Explaining the reason for including Son, MLS said he "has fully regained his form after returning from participating in the World Cup as a representative of Korea," adding that he "scored his first league goal of the season against rival LA Galaxy (a 3-0 win) and added one goal and one assist against Real Salt Lake (a 3-1 win), maintaining his lead in league assists (10)."
Son, who wrapped up the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup with regret, has been scoring goals day after day since returning to his club. In the "LA Derby" against LA Galaxy on the 18th, he scored a clinching goal to finally register his first league goal of the season. Son then recorded one goal and one assist in the home match against Salt Lake on the 23rd and drew an own goal from the opponent, being involved in all three of LAFC's goals to lead a 3-1 victory.
This is the second time Son has been included this season in the Team of the Matchday, the MLS's equivalent of a round best-eleven selection.
Meanwhile, in the weekly best-eleven set up in a 3-4-3 formation, Luis Suarez (Inter Miami) and Kevin Kelsy (Portland Timbers) were named as Son's attacking partners.
