A person in their 20s who jumped into the sea while intoxicated in the early hours was arrested at the scene after assaulting the coast guard officer who carried out the rescue.
According to police, the Seogwipo Police Station on Jeju Special Self-Governing Province said on the 23rd that it had arrested the individual, identified only as A, on charges of obstructing the performance of official duties and was conducting an investigation.
A is accused of wrapping an arm around a coast guard officer's neck and choking the officer while drunk at Jaguri Coast in Seogwipo at around 1 a.m. that day.
Earlier, at about 12:25 a.m., an acquaintance identified as B reported A missing to police, saying that A could not be reached and appeared despondent and at risk of taking their own life.
Coast guard officers responded and rescued A, who was floating in the sea. Immediately after the rescue, A argued with B, and an officer nearby was assaulted by A while trying to break up the dispute, according to authorities.
