Hyundai Motor (005380) and its labor union have launched a cultural support program for social welfare workers in Ulsan and children from vulnerable households in the city's Buk-gu district, marking Social Welfare Day on Sept. 7.
The company and the union donated 50 million won for the program, called "Happy Invitation to Cultural Sharing," at an event held on Sept. 16 to commemorate the day, at Ulsan City Hall and organized by the Ulsan Council on Social Welfare.
The program is a flagship community initiative of Hyundai Motor's Ulsan plant that offers cultural experiences and opportunities for personal growth to Ulsan residents from all walks of life, rather than simply providing goods.
About 500 people attended the event, including officials from Hyundai Motor and its union, Ulsan Mayor Kim Sang-wook and Oh Se-geol, chairman of the Ulsan Council on Social Welfare.
The funds will be used through October to provide cultural experiences to about 900 social welfare workers and 300 children from vulnerable households in the region. Activities include movie screenings, local sporting events, local exhibitions and healing camp programs. To improve satisfaction, the program is also introducing a participant-choice format that lets individuals select the programs they want.
Hyundai Motor has run the program since 2010, with cumulative funding reaching 840 million won.
"We prepared this donation to express our gratitude to the social welfare workers who devote themselves in the field," a Hyundai Motor official said. "We will continue to develop a range of community programs together with the local community."
