A Chinese tourist who used his mobile phone to secretly film women in Seoul's Seongsu-dong and Mapo districts will stand trial.
The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office indicted the man, a Chinese national in his 20s, on the 9th of this month without detention on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes through illegal filming with a camera or similar device, prosecutors said on the 15th.
The man was caught by police at the scene at around 6 p.m. on Aug. 4 while illegally filming a woman with his mobile phone at a cafe in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong District, Seoul.
The subsequent investigation turned up evidence of similar offenses not only in Seongsu-dong but also in the Mapo and Yeongdeungpo districts. Police identified a total of 27 female victims.
The man is believed to have entered South Korea in late July as a tourist. Police barred him from leaving the country on Aug. 5, the day after his arrest, and extended the measure by another month starting Sept. 5.
