NAMYANGJU — The city of Namyangju in Gyeonggi Province has renewed its push for an extension of the Byeollae Line, a project that failed to clear a preliminary feasibility study once before.
Mayor Choi Hyun-duk visited Byeollae Station and Byeollae Byeolgaram Station on the 9th to inspect conditions along the planned extension and review station operations. The inspection followed the project's selection last month for the second round of preliminary feasibility studies in 2026.
After the project failed to pass the review in 2024, the city commissioned its own replanning study to strengthen the economic and policy case for the extension. With the project back on the list of candidate projects, it must now go through the approval process from the beginning.
The extension would build a route of a little more than 3 kilometers connecting Byeollae Station on Line 8 with Byeollae Byeolgaram Station on the Jinjeop Line, part of Line 4. The city expects a direct link between the two lines to improve rail access and regional transit convenience in northeastern Namyangju. Officials consider it a key project for meeting transportation demand that has grown with large-scale development in the city.
At the two stations, the mayor reviewed operations, including station services, and examined conditions for passengers. He met employees of the Namyangju Urban Corporation working on site, thanked them for their work and listened to their views. He then asked them to ensure thorough facility management and safe operations so that residents can use the stations safely and conveniently.
"The Byeollae Line extension is a key project that will connect a severed rail section and improve residents' commuting conditions and regional transit convenience," Choi said. "We will respond actively to the preliminary feasibility study and work closely with related agencies, concentrating our administrative capacity until it finally passes."
The city plans to continue consultations with related agencies during the feasibility study, making the case for the project's necessity, transportation demand and the benefits of linking the rail network.
