BUSAN — Site preparation work for Gadeokdo New Airport has cleared the basic design stage and is moving into detailed design and preparations for early construction. The government plans to break ground on the initial construction portion in November and begin main construction in the first half of next year, targeting a 2035 opening.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Authority received basic design documents on the 7th from the Daewoo Engineering & Construction consortium, the preliminary candidate for a privately negotiated contract on the site preparation project, the authority said.
The basic design work ran for 180 days after the authority held an on-site briefing on March 9. The authority will submit the documents to the Central Construction Technology Deliberation Committee for review, which will verify compliance with relevant regulations and assess the adequacy of construction methods, equipment and process planning.
The committee review will take place this month, with results to be notified next month. The Public Procurement Service plans to select and notify a qualified bidder for detailed design in the same month.
Detailed design will then begin in October, and construction on the initial portion will start in November. Main construction is targeted for the first half of next year.
"After the design review, we will move quickly on detailed design and groundbreaking for the initial construction portion to manage the project in line with the 2035 opening schedule," an authority official said.
