President Lee Jae-myung met Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the 14th and proposed that the two countries "broaden the horizon of mutually beneficial cooperation, from critical mineral supply chains to artificial intelligence and the defense industry."
Lee made the remarks at a summit with Mirziyoyev held at the Blue House, saying, "Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992, Korea and Uzbekistan have built a very solid cooperative relationship across various fields including politics, the economy, and society and culture." He added, "At a time when uncertainty in the international situation is growing, I believe the roles of Korea and Uzbekistan, which share friendship and trust, have become even more important. I believe cooperation between our two countries will be a great force for peace and stability in Eurasia and on the Korean Peninsula."
He also said, "I am grateful for the unwavering support Uzbekistan has extended for peace on the Korean Peninsula, and I look forward to building a path toward sustainable peace together with you going forward."
Lee stressed, "We will broaden the scope of people-to-people and cultural exchanges so that we can carry on this precious historical connection and grow it into greater results. I believe we can broaden the horizon of mutually beneficial cooperation — from transport, infrastructure, health care and the response to the climate crisis to critical mineral supply chains, AI and digital technology, and the defense industry — and jointly drive the momentum for future growth."
In response, Mirziyoyev said, "I hope this visit to Seoul will serve as an occasion to inject new vitality into the special strategic partnership between our two countries." He said, "Korea is a shining example of an economic miracle achieved in a short period on the basis of its people's diligence and strong will," adding, "I felt that President Lee is someone who values action, and a leader with experience and a pragmatic outlook."
He continued, "More than 700 Korean companies have entered Uzbekistan in the form of joint ventures, and the scale of Korean investment continues to expand. The partnership between our two countries is also developing successfully on the international stage." He added, "Uzbekistan will continue to unwaveringly support the Korean government's efforts to solidify peace and security on the Korean Peninsula."
Mirziyoyev is in South Korea on a state visit to attend the Korea-Central Asia summit.
