PARIS — President Lee Jae-myung will ask the National Assembly to hold a confirmation hearing for attorney Kim Ji-yong, the final candidate to head the new Major Crimes Investigation Agency, the presidential office said on the 7th.
Kang Yu-jung, senior presidential spokesperson, said at a briefing in Paris that Lee had decided to nominate Kim, who was recommended for appointment by the interior and safety minister, as the first chief of the agency and to request a parliamentary confirmation hearing.
"We judged that Kim, as an expert in investigative law, is the right person to quickly establish the agency, which is set to launch on Oct. 1," Kang said. "Under the new criminal justice system that separates investigation from prosecution, we expect Kim to successfully lead the agency based on his investigative experience and capabilities."
Lee is visiting France to attend the Lumiere Summit, a film and video industry summit held in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
