President Lee Jae-myung said on the 28th that South Korea must build a society where young people can find opportunities that match their effort, rather than simply telling them to work harder.
Lee made the remarks while presiding over an event at the presidential office called "Unboxing the Youth Budget," which introduced major youth support programs planned for next year. "Among all age groups, young people have become the most vulnerable," he said.

"When I was growing up, the saying that hardship in youth is worth paying for carried some weight, but now you have to be careful saying that or you might get slapped," Lee said. "A fear that one stumble means never getting back up has spread among young people."

It is the first time the government has explained key budget items and programs ahead of the release of its budget proposal. Holding a separate event focused specifically on the youth budget is even more unusual. The move is seen as part of a series of youth-centered policy and strategy announcements the government has been pushing, aimed at reversing a recent decline in support among people in their 20s and 30s.
