The stocks most heavily bought by top-performing investors at Mirae Asset Securities on the morning of the 7th were Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), SK hynix (000660.KS) and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (009150.KS), in that order. Buying concentrated on large-cap chipmakers and related component suppliers as expectations grew for expanded artificial intelligence infrastructure spending following the unveiling of the AI model GPT-6 Astra.
According to Mirae Asset Securities, Samsung Electronics was the most heavily purchased stock as of 11 a.m. that day among "stock market elites" — the top 1% of the brokerage's trading clients by investment return over the past month.
Samsung Electronics was trading at 266,000 won, up 4.11% from the previous session. Buying has flowed into chip stocks broadly as expectations mount that the era of artificial general intelligence, or AGI, will begin in earnest following OpenAI's release of its new AI model.
OpenAI formally unveiled GPT-6 Astra on the 3rd, a model it had signaled for more than a month. OpenAI President Greg Brockman said the model can do anything a human can do with a computer, and that it is reasonable to regard it as an early version of AGI capable of performing most tasks at a level beyond humans.
Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang also said on the 7th on X, formerly Twitter, that GPT-6 Astra was trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems and that AGI has arrived. He added that 400,000 graphics processing units would be brought online next.
SK hynix ranked second in net buying. The stock was trading at 1.744 million won as of 11 a.m., up 5.89% from the previous session.
Brokerage expectations are rising as well. DB Securities raised its target price for SK hynix to 2.3 million won from 2 million won. While the brokerage expects third-quarter revenue and operating profit of 98.2 trillion won and 76.5 trillion won respectively, slightly below market estimates, it projected that earnings improvement would continue on the back of solid server demand and limited supply.
"Shipments of HBM4, the sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory, will begin in earnest from the third quarter of this year, and the price increase for HBM4 next year is projected at about 70% from a year earlier, so solid earnings improvement is expected to continue," said Suh Seung-yeon, an analyst at DB Securities.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics, third in net buying, was trading at 1.421 million won, up 1.36%. The buying is attributed to projections that the markets for multilayer ceramic capacitors and flip-chip ball grid array semiconductor package substrates will boom as AI servers expand and high-performance chip platforms emerge.
Investor sentiment was also stirred by the company's announcement on the 1st that it had signed a contract worth 1.0722 trillion won (about $780 million) to supply MLCCs for AI servers to a big tech company in the United States.
The most heavily sold stocks that day were Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), LG Electronics (066570.KS), Fine M-Tec (441270.KQ) and SK (034730.KS), in that order. In the previous session, the most heavily bought stocks were Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung Electronics, Alteogen (196170.KQ), Pharma Research (214450.KQ) and Hanwha Machinery & Service Holdings (0220W0), while the most heavily sold were SK hynix, Samsung C&T (028260.KS), Samsung Electronics preferred shares (005935.KS) and Psk Holdings (031980.KQ).
