Hanwha Aerospace (012450.KS) has unveiled a new operational concept that links advanced drones with its K9 self-propelled howitzer, tailored to future battlefield conditions. Analysts say the company is targeting a global defense market with urgent demand for force modernization, building on its dominance in tracked howitzers and its recent selection as a prototype supplier for a U.S. wheeled howitzer program.
At the 5th K9 User Club held in Estonia on the 2nd, Hanwha Aerospace disclosed a combined operational concept that links a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) "fire-guidance drone" with the K9 howitzer.
The K9 User Club brings together countries operating the howitzer to share operational and maintenance experience. This year's event drew about 200 participants, the largest turnout to date, including seven operating nations such as South Korea, Poland and Australia, along with observer countries including Spain and Sweden.
Under the new concept, an airborne fire-guidance drone detects and tracks a target to generate coordinates, the K9 fires immediately, and the drone then handles impact observation and battle damage assessment. The approach shortens the "sensor-to-shooter" time from target identification to actual firing, improving response against moving and time-sensitive targets.
Hanwha plans to add a digital logistics support system, known as TSP, that forecasts and procures parts demand in advance to maximize K9 availability. The company aims to build a digital catalog covering 700 to 800 key parts and link it to a parts warehouse under construction in Poland to shorten delivery times for European operators.

The defense industry is watching the K9 platform's evolution and its order wins. A prime example is the K9MH wheeled howitzer, which combines a fully automated turret with a wheeled chassis. Hanwha Defense USA, a Hanwha Aerospace subsidiary, signed a contract last month with the U.S. Army worth up to $262.9 million (about 356.8 billion won) to supply six K9MH prototypes, including an option for 12 additional units, marking what the company calls the first U.S. export contract for a domestically developed Korean weapons system. In preliminary performance testing, the system demonstrated a rapid-fire capability of nine automatic rounds within one minute. Hanwha, emphasizing technological scalability, plans to expand the K9 into a range of platforms, including wheeled and drone-linked variants.
Bae Jin-gyu, head of the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) division at Hanwha Aerospace, said the company "will work more closely with operating nations to strengthen interoperability, and through digital and artificial intelligence-based innovation in logistics support, will improve the K9's operational efficiency and reliability across its entire life cycle."
Its global footprint is expanding alongside the technological push. Hanwha Aerospace recently signed an implementation contract with a Spanish defense company for K9 supplies, estimated at about 1 trillion won. The deal plants the company's flag in continental Western Europe, a market long guarded by established defense powers, and raises the number of adopting countries to 11. Having expanded orders mainly in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, Hanwha Aerospace plans to manage its export pipeline in those markets while concentrating on modernization demand from Western European countries with aging artillery forces.
The K9's export formula is carrying over to the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher. Hanwha Aerospace held a Chunmoo User Workshop during the event, attended by about 40 officials from Chunmoo operating countries, and plans to hold the first official Chunmoo User Club in South Korea next year. Some read the move as laying the groundwork for package exports that bundle the K9 and Chunmoo together.
