Daewoo Engineering & Construction (047040.KS) is teaming up with Stoss, a U.S. landscape architecture and urban design firm, in its bid to win the rebuilding of the Sinwol Siyoung apartment complex in Seoul's Yangcheon district.
The builder said on the 3rd that it had proposed a signature landscape plan for the complex under the concept of "Sinwol Palgyeong," or the Eight Views of Sinwol, developed with Stoss. At its core is a plan to create eight gardens across the site, reinterpreting the natural scenery of the Yangcheon area during the Joseon Dynasty in a contemporary style.
At the center of the complex, the plan places Luminous Stream, which combines water features with art installations, and Waterfall Valley, a resort-style water space. Other gardens include Wellness Garden, designed for use through all four seasons, Terra Play Garden, which pairs play areas with art, and Foret Lounge, a wooded rest area.
The eight gardens would be linked by four themed walking paths — Blooming Gallery Walk, Green Gallery Walk, Healing Walk and Foret Walk — forming a circular pedestrian network stretching six kilometers.
The Sinwol Siyoung project would replace 2,256 existing units at 987-1 Sinwol-dong in Yangcheon district with 3,155 units in buildings of up to 32 stories. Daewoo E&C has designated the project as a strategic site for this year and is pursuing the contract.
Founded in Boston in 2001, Stoss specializes in landscape architecture and urban design and operates studios in Boston and Los Angeles. Its projects include Moakley Park, a waterfront park in Boston, the Brickline Greenway in St. Louis and the Suffolk Downs master plan, a mixed-use development. Founder Chris Reed is a professor of landscape architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.
"Through this collaboration with Stoss, we plan to deliver differentiated landscape value at Sinwol Siyoung," a Daewoo E&C official said. "We will create a landmark residential complex where nature, art and community come together."
