SGC E&C said on the 27th that it ranked 10th in industrial and environmental plant construction performance among general contractors in 2025, according to figures released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
SGC E&C (016250), a global engineering, procurement and construction firm, has built its business around plant projects since its founding in 1967, a span of nearly 60 years. Drawing on in-house engineering capabilities, the company is diversifying into higher-value segments such as chemical and industrial plants.
The firm is also posting results overseas. In 2024, it focused on winning contracts in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, securing about $1.3 billion in new orders and ranking sixth among South Korean builders in new overseas awards.
This year, the company plans to concentrate on winning large overseas projects on the strength of its established plant capabilities. It will continue discussions on cooperation with Aramco and SABIC, two global energy and chemical companies. In Malaysia, it is pursuing new local projects based on a partnership with OCI TerraSus, an affiliate of OCI Holdings (010060).
At home, semiconductor-related investment is a key source of orders. The company plans to leverage its track record — including an expansion of a back-end semiconductor plant in Incheon, construction of a semiconductor packaging and testing plant, and a new semiconductor component manufacturing facility in Opo, Gwangju — to secure additional work.
SGC E&C points to design and construction capabilities backed by its in-house engineering organization as its main competitive strength. The company speeds up technical review and support during project execution and continues value engineering to improve costs and processes during construction, raising execution efficiency.
After signing a roughly $300 million contract with Amkor Technology in July 2022 to build a semiconductor packaging and testing plant, the company completed the work 15 months after breaking ground. Although the project included large-scale semiconductor cleanroom facilities, the company is credited with meeting both the schedule and quality standards based on accumulated experience in semiconductor construction.
The company also has experience in pharmaceutical and biotechnology plants. Since first entering the domestic Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) business in 1998, SGC E&C has carried out EPC projects for pharmaceutical and biotech production facilities, including bio cleanrooms.
"With the plant expertise that only SGC E&C has accumulated, we will continue to build up quality projects and maintain a solid operating profit trend," CEO Lee Chang-mo said. "We will firmly establish a foundation for continued growth on two pillars: petrochemicals and high-value-added sectors such as semiconductors."
