Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese sculptor and installation artist, has died at the age of 97.
Kusama died of multiple organ failure at a hospital in Tokyo on the 14th, Japan's Kyodo News reported on the 27th. She was best known for her monumental pumpkin sculptures covered in vivid polka dots.
Born in 1929 in Japan's Nagano Prefecture, she moved to the United States in 1957 and worked in New York until returning home in 1973. After her return, she produced a wide range of works built on polka-dot and net patterns.
She received Japan's Order of Culture in 2016.
