
LG Uplus (032640.KS) is applying AIoT technology, which combines artificial intelligence with the internet of things, to safety management at large-scale energy facilities.
The telecom operator said it has signed an agreement with Korea District Heating Corp. to upgrade safety management in the district energy sector using AIoT-based systems.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will build a predictive maintenance system based on AIoT. The technology will detect risk factors at large energy production facilities in real time and allow them to anticipate and respond to potential safety incidents in advance.
The two sides will test technologies for early detection of ground subsidence, or sinkholes, detection of stray current in heat transmission pipes, and stronger physical security and monitoring of high-risk facilities such as water and power distribution rooms.
The partners have worked together since 2020, when they jointly developed an IoT temperature sensor for remote monitoring of underground geothermal conditions. Last year they completed field testing of a miniaturized IoT monitoring device that can be installed underground.
Going forward, the company plans to raise safety standards across the district energy industry by adding AI-based risk prediction to existing safety management systems.
