The Korean duo of Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung went 1-1 on the third day of the Presidents Cup, the men's golf team competition between the United States and the International team excluding Europe. The Internationals held on to a three-point lead.
Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung beat the U.S. pair of Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark 2 and 1 in four-ball match play, in which each player uses their own ball, at Medinah Country Club's No. 3 Course in Chicago, Illinois, on the 27th, Korea time. The match was all square through the 15th hole before Kim Si-woo made consecutive birdies at the par-3 16th and the par-4 17th to close it out.
In the foursomes match that followed, in which two players alternate shots with a single ball, Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung lost 2 and 1 to Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. It was their first defeat of the week. The pair have gone 3-1 at this year's event for three points.
Four four-ball matches and four foursomes matches were played on the day. The International team went 1-1-2 in four-ball and 2-2 in foursomes, adding 3.5 points. A win is worth one point and a halve half a point.
The Internationals lead the U.S. team 10.5-7.5 overall, though their advantage has narrowed from four points to three.
Im Sung-jae recorded one halve and one loss. Paired with Korean-Australian Min Woo Lee in four-ball, he halved his match with Justin Thomas and Jackson Koivun. Two holes down through the 14th, the pair won the 15th and 16th in succession to earn half a point. In foursomes alongside Adam Scott of Australia, he was routed 6 and 4 by Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup.
Twelve singles matches will be played on the 28th, the final day of the tournament. If the International team collects five or more points on the closing day, it will claim its first title since the 1998 event in Australia, ending a 28-year wait. The Internationals trail 1-13-1 in the all-time series. The Presidents Cup, first held in 1994, takes place every two years.
