Wanju County in North Jeolla Province said on the 9th that it has resumed construction of the Manggyeonggang Park Golf Course, set to become the largest such facility in the province.
The county plans to build a 45-hole park golf course on a 60,000-square-meter (about 18,150-pyeong) site around the riverside sports park in Bongdong-eup and complete the work by the end of this year. The largest course currently operating in North Jeolla is the 36-hole Saenggang-gol Park Golf Course, meaning the Manggyeonggang course will take the top spot once finished.
Construction began in September last year but was suspended after the Jeonbuk Regional Environmental Office revised its basic river management plan. Work restarted recently after the related administrative procedures were completed.
The county also expects to cut costs by linking the project to the environmental office's river improvement project for the Gosan District 1 section of the Manggyeong River. Soil generated during river maintenance will be reused as fill material for the golf course site, reducing the expense of sourcing and hauling soil separately.
Starting with the delivery of that soil, the county will carry out site preparation and turf planting in sequence, with all work scheduled for completion by year-end. Once the course opens, the county intends to host national park golf tournaments and draw large numbers of sports tourists.
"We will finish construction by the end of the year to provide residents with a safe and pleasant space for community sports, and turn it into a destination that attracts recreational sports tourists from across the country," Wanju County Mayor Yoo Hee-tae said.
